Mindset Matters

Ben places great emphasis on the crucial role of mindset in climbing competitions. He stresses the importance of approaching these events with a positive and growth-oriented outlook. Instead of viewing your fellow competitors as rivals or obstacles to overcome, Ben encourages climbers to embrace them as teammates and collaborators in the pursuit of personal excellence.

By shifting your perspective and seeing your competitors as allies, you create a supportive and uplifting environment that allows everyone, including yourself, to perform at their best. This mindset fosters a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose, reducing the pressure and anxiety that often accompany competitive situations.

Moreover, Ben reminds climbers, especially those participating in their first competition, to let go of expectations and focus solely on giving their all. Embracing the experience as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery, rather than fixating on specific outcomes, enables climbers to fully immerse themselves in the moment and climb with a sense of freedom and joy.

Cultivating a positive mindset extends beyond the competition itself. Ben encourages climbers to view their entire climbing journey as a continual process of learning and development. Every challenge, setback, and triumph serves as a valuable lesson and stepping stone towards personal growth. By maintaining a positive outlook and embracing the journey, climbers can find fulfillment and motivation in the face of adversity, propelling them to new heights both on and off the wall.

The Foundation of Success

Finger strength is a crucial component of climbing performance. Ben shares his routine, which includes dynamic stretches and bodyweight exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, and squats. He then progresses to using a tension block and pin, performing finger curls with increasing weight for three sets of five reps on each hand. Find a comfortable starting weight and gradually challenge yourself as you build strength.

Limit Bouldering

After warming up and completing some light climbing, Ben dedicates 45 minutes to projecting the most challenging climbs he can handle. These “limit bouldering” sessions focus on short, intense sections or links of 3-5 moves that demand maximum effort and frequent falls. Embrace the challenge and rest for 3-5 minutes between attempts to maintain high-quality efforts. Remember, this is about pushing your limits, not endurance training.

Board Climbing

Ben utilizes the Kilter Board at his gym, but any climbing board can be effective. He recommends selecting 6-10 climbs that range from 7/10 to 9/10 difficulty, acknowledging that grades can vary. Focus on giving each attempt your all, be intentional with your movements, and allow ample rest between attempts. Embrace the unique challenges that board climbing presents.

Be Like Water

Dynos often pose a challenge for climbers accustomed to keeping their hips close to the wall. Ben channels his inner Bruce Lee and advises climbers to “Be Like Water.” Embrace a loose and fluid style, keeping your arms straight. This approach will help you conquer that elusive dyno project you’ve been dreaming about.
